What is Cataract?

It is a condition in which the lens gets opacified leading to decreased vision and many other symptoms.

What are the causes and risk factors for development of cataract?

  • Aging

  • Trauma

  • Diabetes

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Long term use of steroids

  • Smoking, Obesity

  • Previous Eye Surgery

What are the symptoms of Cataract?​

  • Diminution or blurring of vision

  • Appearance of halos around lights

  • Frequent changes in power of spectacles

  • Decreased intensity of colors

  • Double vision(diplopia) in one eye

  • Increased sensitivity to light

What is the Treatment of Cataract?

Surgery is the best treatment for cataract.

How is a Cataract surgery done?

The opacified lens is removed and an artificial intraocular lens is placed in the same place for good vision.

How long does the surgery take? How many days of rest is required?

The surgery takes 10 minutes after full dilatation of the pupil.

Usually 2-3 days of rest is recommended, post which the patient can resume daily activities.

What are the types of lenses available?

  • Monofocal lens- a traditional lens built to aid in distant vision only, hence spectacle would be required for near vision.

  • Toric lens- a lens used in patients with significant astigmatism

  • Trifocal lens- a lens which when inserted helps see near, intermediate and distant vision
