Retina is one of the most important layers of the eye as it captures the raw image in the form of light and converts it into the actual image to be perceived by the brain to understand and interpret the image.

What are the symptoms of retinal disorders?

  • Blurring of vision

  • Diminution of vision

  • Appearance of floaters

  • Appearance of flashes of light

Diabetic Retinopathy

This is a complication of uncontrolled or long standing diabetes mellitus. The retinal blood vessels break down causing fluid leak into the center of the retina, the macula causing macular edema. There can also be formation of new blood vessels, called neovascularization. These vessels can break and result in hemorrhages. This finally results in loss of vision.

reinal vein occlusion

Retinal vein occlusion

When the central vein or its branch which carries blood away from the retina gets blocked, it results swelling of the vein and hemorrhage. This causes loss of vision in a short span of time.

Retinoblastoma

Retinoblastoma is a cancer of the eye that affects children. It is often inherited from affected parents. It starts from the retinal layer of the eye. It is often detected very late as it shows minimal signs and symptoms. As the cancer progresses it is seen as a white mass inside the eye. In later stages, the cancer spreads outside the eye posing danger to life. Multimodal treatment including surgery, laser chemotherapy and radiotherapy are required to halt the progression.

Age related macular degeneration

This is a common disorder of the retinal layer as a person ages usually above 50 years. This is a degenerative condition in which the retinal layer is affected which causes gradual diminution of vision as age increases.

Central Serous Retinopathy

This is a condition in which the central part of retina which is the macula is affected by fluid accumulation. It is more common in adults between the ages of 20-50 years. Most patients experience blurring of vision. This might be temporary or permanent.
